Abstract

1284634 Regulating I C engine fuel supply BORG WARNER CORP 4 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 27099/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division G3] In a fuel system for an I C engine with an inlet manifold 12 and inlet valve 15 fuel is supplied to an injection nozzle 16 from a pump 18 by a fluid logic switch 19 (see Fig. 5) which normally causes the fuel to flow along by-pass line 21 but on receipt of a signal pulse in line 26 and for the duration of the signal causes fuel to pass along line 28 to the nozzle. The signal pulse is formed by a camshaft/crankshaft driven semicylindrical disc which is connected between a pneumatic pressure source 36 and a fluid amplifier 43 to feed pulses whose frequency is dependent on speed thereto. The output line 54 of the latter is connected directly to line 62 of a pulse forming amplifier 44 and via a variable-volume chamber 67 to line 68 of the amplifier 44. Piston 77 is moved by the vacuum in the inlet manifold to vary the volume and thus the time delay between the two pulses fed to amplifier 44 according to engine load. The frequency of the pulses fed to line 26 is thus dependent on engine speed while the duration of the pulses is dependent on engine load. The fluid logic switch 19 may be replaced by a threeway switching valve 119, Fig. 4, which on receipt of a pulse at 126 disconnects line 122 from line 124 and connects it to line 129. Both the fluid switches of Figs. 4, 5 may be bi-stable and the signals on lines 65, 64 are then fed directly to lines 26, 27, amplifier 44 being dispensed with.
