Abstract

1284594 Attaching sutures to needles DEKNATEL Inc 16 Dec 1969 [25 Aug 1969] 61353/69 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B3 and Dl] A method of attaching a suture to a needle comprises forming a needle point 17 at one end of a length of initially soft wire, forming a generally V-sectioned channel 11 in the side of the needle, partially closing the channel, for example to a U-sectioned shape, by bending the walls towards one another, hardening the needle, and forcing the walls 12, 13 closer together to hold one end of a suture located in the channel. The preclosing of the channel is preferably performed in a die comprising two members having opposed semi-cylindrical recesses therein within which the walls 12, 13 are bent towards each other. The subsequent closing of the walls 12, 13 onto the suture is preferably accomplished without annealing the needle, or after only one annealing stage for very hard needles. Nibs (15), Fig. 2 (not shown) may be formed in the channel 11 to grip the suture.
