1284549 Centrifugal strainer SOC FIVES LILLE-CAIL 8 Dec 1969 [9 Dec 1968] 59813/ 69 Heading B1D In a centrifugal strainer comprising a solid frusto-conical bowl 10 lined with screen 22 and rotating about a vertical axis in a vessel divided by partition 16 into filtrate and solid receiving spaces 18 and 20, the bowl carries a dependent skirt 26 on to whose inner surface the filtrate is received from the inner surface of bowl 10 by way of channels formed in the upper edge of the skirt and possibly in the upper flange of the bowl. In Fig. 2 the channels comprise recesses or a single groove 30 in the skirt and holes 32 in the bowl rim. Figs. 4, 5, 6 (not shown) illustrate alternative channel constructions. Partition 16 is extended inwards at the top and also carries by spacers an upright annular wall 40 extended inwards by frusto-conical wall 38. Skirt 26 has cylindrical surfaces 34, 36 which make a close clearance with the upper edge of partition 16 and the inner edge of wall 38, forming annular chamber 50. Filtrate is thrown from the lower edge of skirt 26 as a continuous sheet, impinges on wall 38 and flows down into channel 42, then overflows into space 18. Wall 40 dips into channel 42 forming a hydraulic seal which together with the continuous sheet separates spaces 18 and 50 effectively. Any filtrate which does enter chamber 50 between wall 38 and skirt 26 flows down into channel 42 and cannot reach solids chamber 20.
