Abstract

1284396 Shock absorption; deformable energy absorbing devices ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 12 Sept 1969 [19 Sept 1968] 44575/68 Headings F2E and F2S [Also in Division G6] An element for absorbing impact shocks is made of sintered metallic powder or mesh. The element is a tube or rod, has at least 15% voids and is deformed in compression by up to 45% of its unstressed length. The material of the element has a ductility of between 10% and 20% elongation in its solid form and may be austenitic stainless steel. The element is used in nuclear reactors, or as the final stage in arresting lifts and railway vehicles, where most of the energy has been absorbed by springs and conventional shock-absorbers.
