Abstract

1,088,916. Controlling reactors. GESELLSCHAFT FUER KERNFORSCHUNG m.b.H. May 10, 1965 [May 13, 1964], No. 19566/65. Heading G6C. [Also in Division F2] A nuclear reactor safety rod is arrested, at the end of its vertical fall into the core, by a gasfilled shock-absorber. To prevent a reversed upward motion of the rod by the expansion of the compressed gas, the latter is automatically released, after the commencement of the upward movement. The gas release valve is carried on the absorber piston and is opened by a sliding sleeve mounted on the piston and frictionally engaged with the cylinder of the absorber. Upon commencement of the piston upward movement the sleeve adheres to the cylinder surface and does not move with the piston. Continued movement of the piston brings the valve outlet beyond the sleeve and the compressed gas is released. In an alternative form, the release valves are opened by relative displacement between the sleeve and piston due to the inertia of the sleeve.
