Abstract

1,126,218. Control rods. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. 3 Dec., 1965 [7 Dec., 1964], No. 51389/65. Heading G6C. A reactor control rod comprises plate-shaped neutron absorbing means mounted inside a supporting framework in such a manner that substantially all the mechanical stress occurring is taken up by the framework. Fig. 1 shows a cross-section through a control rod in the form of a cross with built-in spring members. The boron steel plates 1 are hermetically sealed-off from the outside by sheet metal plates 2 and at the lateral edge of two of the plates 1 there are spring members 3 formed by tubes slit longitudinally. Resilient members may also be provided at the lower edges of the plates 1. A spring member of similar form to the spring members 3 is provided at the centre of the cross formed by the plates 1. The boron steel plates 1 may be of triangular shape, each limb of the cross then being composed of two triangular plates, as shown in Fig. 4, so arranged that a diagonal division line exists along which the plates can slide when they expand. A spring arrangement 3 at the centre of the cross comprises a U-shaped member. Cup springs are provided between the two outer limbs of the U-shaped member and two of the boron steel plate assemblies, and also between opposite faces of the centre limb of the U-shaped member and the other two plate assemblies. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the outer plates 2 are corrugated in the longitudinal direction so that they take over the function of the spring members. Instead of the spring 3 shown in Fig. 1 being of slit tubular construction, a row of helical springs connected in parallel may be used.
