Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of energy absorption, by compressing in the direction of application of force an energy absorption element of cellular structure, which is utilized as an automobile bumper or the like, and by thereafter eliminating the force of the compression to return the element to its original form to reduce the initial buckling load. CONSTITUTION:An energy absorption element A includes a plurality of prismshaped sections 1 having space S inside. The prism-shaped sections 1 are arranged like a matrix. The adjacent prism-shaped sections 1 are coupled to each other by a rib plate 2. After the cellular structure A is compressed to 5 to 30% of the height of the prism-shaped section 1, the force of the compression is eliminated to return the structure to its original shape to reduce the initial buckling load, thereby greatly improving the efficiency of energy absorption.
