Abstract

1284265 Hydraulic damper with threshold resistance GIRLING Ltd 3 Oct 1969 [14 Oct 1968 31 Oct 1968] 48603/68 and 51641/68 Heading F2S A piston-cylinder damper for a trailer towbar coupling has means on the cylinder for covering a port 1 in the piston's-rod 3 thereby to provide a threshold resistance to initial inward movement of the piston 5 from the fully extended position thereof. Initially the port 1, which is the outlet for a piston valve having a valve member 6, is covered by the piston-rod guide 4, and so liquid in front of the piston can escape only through a restricted passage (not shown) in a base valve assembly 7 into a reservoir R, a recuperation valve member 8 unseating to allow flow of liquid from the reservoir into the annulus end of the cylinder. The member 8 may be a plate valve member (Fig. 5, not shown). Permanently open orifices 12, 12A may be provided. The base valve assembly 7 includes a recuperation valve for flow of liquid from the reservoir R on damper extension.
