Abstract

1283851 Preparation of carboxylic acids RHONE-POULENC SA 5 Nov 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 52736/70 Heading C2C Carboxylic acids are prepared by the oxidation of the corresponding aldehyde with molecular oxygen in an aqueous solution of an inorganic alkaline reagent in the presence of a palladium catalyst. The process is particularly suitable for aldehydes containing carbon-carbon unsaturation in the molecule, e.g. acrolein, methacrolein, crotonaldehyde, sorbaldehyde, cinnamaldehyde and their homologues. The preferred catalyst is metallic palladium which may be carried on a support. In the examples cinnamic acid is prepared by the oxidation of cinnamaldehyde using palladium supported on charcoal in the presence of sodium hydroxide.
