Abstract

1421956 Unsaturated aliphatic acids STANDARD OIL CO 29 May 1973 [16 April 1973] 25552/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Unsaturated aliphatic acids are produced by the vapour phase oxidation of the corresponding unsaturated aldehydes with molecular oxygen in the presence of steam in a ratio of 0À5 to 4 moles oxygen and 1 to 20 moles steam per mole aldehyde at a temperature of 150-450‹ C. and a pressure of 0À5 to 10 atm. using a catalyst of empirical formula wherein: A is Sb, Fe, Ni, Co, Zn, Mn, Mg, Cu or mixtures thereof; a is 0À1 to 10 but is 6À1 to 10 when A is Sb; b is 0À1 to 12; C is 0À1 to 6; d is 0À5 to 12; e is 8 to 16; and x is a number to satisfy valency requirements. The examples describe the oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid. The oxidation of methacrolein to methacrylic acid is also mentioned.
