Abstract

1491183 Methacrylic acid and derivatives RÍHM GmbH 6 April 1976 13926/76 Heading C2C Methacrylic acid, nitrile and esters are prepared by reacting propionic acid, nitrile or ester thereof with methylol preferably in the presence of alumina catalyst with or without ferric oxide and titanium dioxide. The catalyst may have been heat-treated. The reaction with propionic acid may in the presence of an alcohol, e.g. methanol advantageously in the presence of an acid anhydride, to produce the ester. The propionic acid may be prepared from ethylene and carbon monoxide and the methylol from methanol and aqueous formaldehyde.
