Abstract

1283636 Measuring tension in cables GLANZSTOFF A G 3 July 1970 [3 July 1969] 32411/70 Heading G1N and G1W The tension in a travelling cable 1 is measured by passing it around two rollers or bars 2 mounted on an arm 3 which is attached to the end of a spindle 4 the torque on which is measured by strain gauges 6. A handle 7 may be provided for turning the spindle and a closure plate may be provided to prevent the cable leaving the rollers laterally. The strain gauges may be connected to an A. C. bridge circuit and the temperature coefficients of the gauges and part 5 of the spindle on which they are mounted may be adapted to each other. The part 5 may be of steel and the other parts of the spindle of hard rubber. The device may be calibrated using a length of cable with a weight at each end guided by other rollers to follow a correct line as shown in Fig. 1.
