1283458 Wrapping machine for cylindrical Objects S A ODELBERG 9 Sept 1970 43237/70 Heading B8C In a machine for wrapping a cylindrical object 3 rotatably supported on two rotating rollers 27 a web of wrapping material 5 from the selected one of several variously sized, braked, rolls 4 passes over belts, or strips, 7 having pneumatic guiding means and is fed forward by means of a pair of braked feed rolls 8 to a cutting unit 10 which includes a guide portion 10 having a curved support plate 18, 19 which directs the web downwardly to a further pair of rollers 12, which advances the web past the rollers 28 of an adhesive transfer unit which glues the edges of the web 5 before it is guided, by an airstream from nozzles 21, around the object 3. When cutting takes place the guide portion 10 is swung downwardly about a shaft 20 below the cutting edge of a knife 11, which severs the web as the rolls 8, 8 and 4 are synchronously braked lightly and more heavily respectively, the knife 11 being mounted on a holder 29 having a surface 29 along which a spring-loaded doctor device 23, linked to the guide portion 10, is adapted to reciprocate. In an alternative arrangement a moving knife may move against a stationary guide portion. The separated portion of the web is moved vertically downwards by the further pair of rollers 12, for continued wrapping of the object which already has one, or more, windings therein, the web passing the glueing rollers 28. The leading end of the web, after cutting at the station 9, is directed toward the nip of the rollers 12 by an airstream from a nozzle 13 which urges the web downwardly against a vertical partition 31 and towards inclined belts 26, the passage of the web from the rollers 12, to the object 3 being assisted by an airstream from the second set of nozzles 21. Belts 14, 15, which are movable toward and away from, direct the web 5 around, the object 3. The upper roll 8 may comprise several spaced rollers, and only the feed roll 4 may be braked. The various pneumatic web directing means 7, 13 and 21 are only operative while they are directing a leading edge of the web.
