1283215 Making smoke H BECKER [trading as HEINZ BECKER FLEISCHENEIMAS CHINEN-UND APPARATE BAU] 25 Aug 1969 [26 Aug 1968] 42320/69 Heading A2D [Also in Division A5] Apparatus for making smoke for curing purposes comprises a water tank 3 capable of being heated and a compressed air reservoir 2 which may also be heated by heaters 4 and supplied by the pump 23, the tanks being contained within an insulated casing 1. Air from tank 2 and water or steam from tank 3 pass to a mixing nozzle 6 via control valves 8 and 11 respectively, their temperatures being adjusted so that the mixture obtained in the mixing zone 14 is of the required temperature (e.g. between 200 and 500‹C). The mixture then passes through apertures into a container 16 holding the smoke-producing material (e.g. sawdust or wood-chips) from which the smoke issues from other apertures. The container may be one taking a single charge of material or may be adapted for continuous working as by provision of a conveyor belt passing therethrough. In a modified apparatus, partly shown in Fig. 2, air and water droplets are fed into a chamber via the duct 35 and spray heads 36 respectively wherein they are mixed and a heated solid material 33 raises the temperature of the mixture before it passes to the smokeproducing unit via the duct 37. The heated solid may be stone or metal particles supported on a spiral or helical heating element 34 which may be an electrical resistance heating device.
