Abstract

1409770 Mixing apparatus H N SHEARER 14 Feb 1973 [3 Nov 1972] 7253/73 Heading B1C [Also in Division F4] In a method and apparatus for making a bitumen/aggregate mix, wet aggregate is metered by a continuous weight control device 12 to an endless belt 14 where it is sprayed with water if necessary at 22 to bring it to a predetermined moisture content, sprayed with heated liquefied bitumen at 30, and charged to one end of a rotatable mixing/ drying drum 32. Air is drawn through the drum by an exhaust fan 50 and heated by a burner 40 at the inlet end of the drum. The latter has stationary end covers 36, 38 and the burner 40 is spaced from the point of entry of the mix to prevent flame contact with the bitumen; in a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the flame is surrounded by a tube (41) which extends into the drum to a point where there is no visible flame, and the entry shoot for the mix is bifurcated to deliver each side of the tube. The burner may be controlled by a temperature sensor in the mix on the exhaust gas and the aggregate, bitumen and water feeds may be interlocked to maintain a constant ratio. The drum 32 has quick conveying spiral flights at the charging end, followed by segmented, stepped flights and then by straight flights 32a. Preferred dimensions, flow rates and other parameters are recited. The process reduces the discharge of fines into the atmosphere and protects the bitumen against premature ageing or hardening.
