[Also in Division B5] Particles of plastics material which are to be pre-expanded or heated prior to moulding, e.g. a porous article, are injected by a stream of gas into a heated vertically disposed cylindrical chamber 10 through an inlet 14 placed at the base of the chamber tangential to its surface. The chamber need not be heated by other means if steam is used as an injector. The particles are swirled into orbit around the chamber by rotating blades 16 and gradually rise to the top of the chamber upon heating, agglomeration of the particles being prevented by fixed blades 18 disposed alternately with the rotating blades. The particles leave the chamber in a direction tangential to their orbit within the chamber through a shoot 24, comprising walls 32, 30, 28, carried by a closure plate 22 which is adjustable over an opening 20 in the wall of the cylinder, along rails 26, by a rack-and-pinion 34, 36 so that the time spent in the cylinder and thus the heat absorbed by the particles may be controlled.
