Abstract
1283155 Thermal regenerators LEYLAND GAS TURBINES Ltd 5 May 1971 [9 May 1970] 22507/70 Heading F4K A ceramic, disc-shaped matrix for a thermal regenerator is formed by spirally winding superimposed corrugated and uncorrugated sheets of a material (e.g. paper) made from ceramic fibres (e.g. alumino-silicate fibres) after soaking said sheets in a binding solution and then drying at a relatively low temperature (e.g. 150‹ C.), repeating the soaking and drying steps at least once and preferably several times, at least once after the sheets have been spirally wound, and finally heating the " green " matrix to a firing temperature of between 1000‹ and 1200‹ C. The binding solution may be polyvinyl, alcohol or silica sol. An organic binder may be introduced between the corrugated and uncorrugated sheets as they are being superimposed prior to the spiral winding step. Additives comprising salts of aluminium lithium or calcium may be introduced into the binding solution at one of the soaks/drying stages, these being said to increase the strength and decrease the permeability of the ceramic matte formed on firing.
