Abstract

1282256 Joining webs ZERAND CORP 13 March 1971 6836/71 Heading B8R Apparatus for applying splicing tape to a butt joint formed between a new web and an exhausting web comprises a first roller 38 for automatically applying tape to the top of the splice and a second roller 38a for automatically applying tape to the bottom of the splice, the rollers 38, 38a having carriers 64, 64a upon which the splicing tape is mounted (Fig. 6, not shown). The rollers 38, 38a are formed with flats 40, 40a to provide clearance for the web during normal running and are respectively associated with a pawl and ratchet assembly (76, 76a) and an air cylinder assembly (78, 78a, Figs. 2 to 4, not shown) which, when actuated, accelerate the rollers to the speed of the running web, this actuation being effected by appropriately disposed sensors responsive to the presence of a metal knife secured to the leading edge of the new web. The rollers 38, 38a are synchronized through a mechanical linkage (Fig. 2, not shown) and cooperate with pivotally mounted nip rollers 68, 68a during the tape-applying operation.
