Abstract

1351232 Splicing webs HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 11 May 1971 [12 May 1970] 14249/71 Heading B8R In apparatus for splicing a replacement strip 2, e.g. of cigarette paper, to a working strip 1 the strip 2 is positioned so that there is a space 10 between it and the strip 1, and its leading end is attached to a drum 7 by means of a clamp 9; a double-sided adhesive strip 15 is located within the space 10 and between rollers 32, 33, the roller 32 engaging the strip 1 and being fixed in position and the roller 33 engaging the strip 2 and being mounted on a pivoted carrier 36. When the amount of strip 1 on the expiring reel (not shown) has dropped to a predetermined limit, as detected by a sensor of the photo- electric or mechanical type, a motor is switched on to drive the drum 7 so that the strip 2 is accelerated up to, or slightly less than, the speed of the strip 1; an electromagnet 44 is then actuated to pivot the roller 33 towards the roller 32, whereby the strips 1 and 2 are united by the adhesive strip 15. Simultaneously with this movement a cutter 54 is actuated to sever the strip 1 behind the splice; then, when the splice reaches a guide roller 5 located opposite the drum 7 that portion of the strip 2 which is disposed in advance of the splice and which is winding on to the drum 7 is severed from the rest of the strip by means of a cutter 55, thus completing the splicing operation.
