Abstract

1282255 Joining webs ZERAND CORP 2 March 1971 5834/71 Heading B8R A butt splicer comprises a roll stand 16 for supporting an expiring web roll 22 and a new web roll 20 which, prior to a splicing operation, may be rotated either in a clockwise or in an anticlockwise direction dependent upon which surface of the new web it is desired to place on top of the running web 14; a roll accelerator 25; an applicator 18 for applying tape to a splice when formed; and an apparatus 10 for directing the leading edge of the new web from the rotating roll 20 into engagement with the running web 14. The apparatus 10 comprises a frame 36 carrying nip rollers 48T, 48B associated with respective belt assemblies 62T, 62B which can be selectively moved by means of pneumatic cylinders (Fig. 3, not shown) into a first operative position in which the assembly 62T is biased into engagement with the roller 48B, and into a second operative position in which the assembly 62B is biased into engagement with the roller 48T. The leading edge of the new web roll 20 is adhesively prepared and has a knife attached thereto (Figs. 9 to 11, not shown) and the apparatus 10 is moved either into the first position in which it will strip the prepared leading edge from a clockwise-rotating roll 20 and guide it into engagement with the running web 14, or into the second position in which the apparatus 10 will effect the same operation when the roll 20 is rotating in an anticlockwise direction.
