Abstract
1281940 Railway level crossing H ZIEGLER 19 Nov 1969 [19 Nov 1968] 56689/69 Heading E1G A level crossing for a road 5 and a railway track 1 comprises slabs, e.g. of reinforced concrete, supported on the rails and extending freely above the sleepers, there being at least one inner slab 6 between the rails and at least one outer slab 7 on each side, and profiled strips 8 and 9, preferably moulded from plastics, which lie against the sides of the rails and extend along the rails between the fasteners 2 securing the rails to the sleepers 3, for supporting the slabs 6, 7 on the rails by means of edge projections on the slabs received in grooves in the profiled strips 8, 9. The slabs have spaced recesses cut away along their edges to accommodate the fasteners 2. In assembly, the inner slab 6 is positioned and the strips 8 inserted by sliding between the rails and the slab; alternatively, the strips 8 may be divided horizontally in two parts, the lower parts are positioned first, the inner slab 6 is laid and the upper parts inserted by sliding laterally. The outer edges of outer slabs 7 may be supported on channel irons 12 on the ballast bed 4, and may have vertical adjusting means at 13. The slabs may each be surrounded by a metal frame for added reinforcement.
