Abstract

1281373 Removable coating for metal SCM CORP 8 Sept 1969 44361/69 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] Metals to be heated to 1850-2300‹F are coated with a removable protective composition comprising comminuted inorganic material containing MgO, SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 ; boric acid; oxides of nickel, arsenic, and/or chromium; and a liquid binder carrier (see Divisions C4-C5). The comminuted material may be a frit, and the composition may also include clay and/or a feldspar. The composition is used to give a temporary protective coating during high-temperature working of metals, particularly steels. In Example I an aqueous suspension of silica, china clay, boric acid, talc, nickel oxide and arsenic trioxide is spray-coated on to stainless steel-clad lowcarbon steel which, after drying, is heated to 1960‹F; on cooling again the coating spontaneously spalls. In Example II an aqueous emulsion of a polyacrylate and a pine resin containing two frits and petalite is dip-coated on to a stainless steel rod which is dried and heated to 1925‹F; the coating spalls on cooling. A similar result is obtained in Example III by dip-coating a stainless steel billet with a solvent solution of polybutyl methacrylate containing mineral spirits, aluminium stearate, a frit, and feldspar, heating to 2300‹F, and cooling, and in Example IV using a composition of vinyl-toluenated-alkyd resin, xylene and/or naphtha, two frits, and petalite.
