Abstract
1,224,656. Refractory coatings. SCM CORP. 11 July, 1968, No. 33215/68. Heading C1J. [Also in Divisions B1-B2 and C4-C5] A particulate refractory composition for forming a temporary protective coating on metal comprises 40-85% by wt. crystalline Cr 2 O 3 , 3-15% crystalline alkaline earth metal chromate, and 3-20% of a glass frit containing not more than 5% by wt. ZnO and not more than 6% by wt. fluorine. In addition, 0-30% by wt. crystalline silica, 0-50% crystalline aluminium silicate, and 0-10% of a crystalline polyvalent metal molybdate, vanadate, zirconate, or hafniate may be present. Preferred refractories contain BaCrO 4 and have an average particle size 5-50 Á. Coating formulations comprise the refractory and a solid and/or liquid diluent. Solid diluents include celluloses and gums, casein, glue and synthetic resins, usually in an amount 1-15% by wt. of the refractory. The liquid diluent may be water or one of numerous organic liquids, in an amount 50-200% by wt. of the refractory. Celluloses and gums are preferably used in a liquid diluent. Aqueous formulations preferably include a siliceous clay, and organic liquids a magnesium montmorillonite, as thickener.
