Abstract

1281328 Reciprocating engines ELECTROLUX A B 21 Jan 1970 [29 Jan 1969 and 16 Dec 1969] 2921/70 Headings F1K and F1M A reciprocating engine comprises a cylinder head 18 defining an outer space 21 which is outside the working space 20 of the cylinder 14 and adapted to receive a working medium under pressure, a wall 19 between the outer space and the working space having an opening 23, a valve member 24 movable to and from a closed position at the opening, means for controlling the valve member responsive to the pressure of the working medium, means 33 and 36-40 for regulating the influence of the working medium on the movement of the valve member in accordance with the position of the piston in its path of movement in the cylinder, spring means 30 disposed in a space in the cylinder head and biasing the valve member towards the opening 23 in the apertured wall to move the valve member to its closed position and a passageway between the working space of the cylinder and the spring means space, the passageway at one end having an opening 34, 41, 42, 43 at the inside wall of the cylinder and the pressure of the working medium in the spring space on the valve member balancing the pressure in the outer space on the valve member in a direction opposite to the biasing action of the spring means whereby the spring means becomes effective to move the valve member to its closed position responsive to movement of the piston from the cylinder head past the opening of the passageway at the inside wall of the cylinder to a position at which the lastmentioned opening is in communication with the working space of the cylinder. The invention is described as applied to a steam engine. The engine may exhaust to atmosphere or to a condenser. A number of alternative arrangements of the inlet valve are described.
