Abstract

1280994 Automatic control of current and voltage WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 11 July 1969 [3 May 1968] 21138/68 Addition to 1098358 Heading G3R A battery charger circuit of the kind described and claimed in parent Specification in which a battery 13 first charged to a predetermined voltage and is subsequently charged at a lower floating constant voltage, is arranged so that the initial charge up to the predetermined voltage comprises a constant current period followed by a constant voltage period. In the example given, the battery is first charged at a constant current I1 until a voltage V1 is reached, when the voltage is held constant while the current drops to I2. This current is maintained until the predetermined voltage V2 is reached. Subsequently, both the voltage and current are reduced in alternate steps until the floating voltage V4 is finally attained. The circuit may be used on an electric vehicle.
