Abstract

128,040. Taplin, T. J., and Taplin, T. J. July 11, 1918. Balancing automatically. The elevator and ailerons of an aeroplane are controlled by a universally mounted lever having crossed wind-vanes at its upper end and adjustable springs at its lower end so that the lever is kept normally vertical. The Figure shows a lever A having vanes at its upper end in longitudinal and transverse vertical planes. The lower end of the lever below the universal joint B is connected to springs E, E<1>, F, F<1>, the tension of which can be adjusted by turning drums E<3>, F<2>, F<3>. The spring E<1> may be dispensed with and a stop provided to limit the longitudinal swing of the lever. The control cables may be connected to the pilot's control lever, or separate connexions may be provided in which case the control cables from the lever A may be passed around movable jockey pulleys so that these cables can be slackened, when the pilot desires to resume hand control.
