Abstract

1279290 Reducing resistance to propulsion; stabilizing ships V M STOODLEY 27 Oct 1970 [13 Dec 1969] 60902/69 Heading B7M The bow, stern and sides of a ship's hull project below the floor of the hull and beneath the floor is a series of adjacent air compartments A-E and G-K extending completely around the inner perimeter of the hull, the compartment walls preventing air from escaping from one compartment to another. The lift due to the buoyancy of the enclosed air reduces drag and the air compartments provide greater stability under shifting loads.
