Abstract

1279259 Electroluminescence SANDERS ASSOCIATES Inc 5 June 1969 28601/69 Headings C4S [Also in Division B6] A method of producing an electroluminescent character display device includes providing an electrically conducting member, e.g. Cu, applying an etch resistent coating to part of the first surface, e.g. photographically, etching-away the uncoated parts to leave lands 14, introducing insulator 15, e.g. epoxy filter glass, into the spaces formed on etching; providing directly connectedelectrical conductors over the insulator surfaces, the conductors on one side being characterelectrodes 12e, then providing an electroluminescent layer andtransparent electrode on top of the character electrodes. The electrodes may be provided by a printed circuit process in forms of a meter dial; clock hands, alpha numeric displays (Fig. 1, not shown). The metal-member may be self-supporting-initially. The etching is disclosed as being only to a predetermined depth of the metal member so that one set of electrodes is formed by further preferential etching of the copper layer, layer 17 of epoxy fibre glass 17 being added. Each character electrode may have a multiplicity of interconnection contacts 18, 19 and may be interconnected between segments of various character electrodes, and the printed circuits 16 may be at different levels. Connections 13b may be eyelets, protruding pins or exposed tabs and may appear only at the top side as at 13a or extend through the substrate 13b. In Fig. 3 (not shown), dielectric layer (21) is of barium titanate with resin binder, phosphor layer (22) is applied by spraying, or silk screening, and may be ZnS: Cu, Cl with a dielectric material, electrode 23 of electrically conducting material (e.g. tin, stannic or indium oxide) on fibrous glass sheet or other vitreous body by iridizing. Electrode (23) maty be applied in sections to cover each character individually. Cover layer (25) of plastic glass may be provided. The characters may be letters, numbers, -or -symbols, and phrases, words, animated cartoons or moving displays are exemplified.
