The sign of each quantity is indicated by an additional bi-stable in each counter, affected by passage of the counter through zero, and controls the sequence of operation. The resulting value # is applied as a pulse of constant amplitude and variable duration to a valve 5 to adjust the plant, such as by regulating the steam input differential pressure on a boiler.
