Abstract

1277761 Blood collection device MICROMEDIC SYSTEMS Inc 14 July 1969 [26 July 1968] 35306/69 Heading A5R A device, Fig. 1, for collecting a percutaneous blood sample from a finger &c comprises a blind tubular body 1, a funnel member 3 of resilient material engaged by means of a plug 2 at its discharge end in the open end of said body 1 and supported by an annular zone 4a provided at the base of the cup 4 of the member 3, a capillary cannula 6 forming an extension of the funnel member 3 and extending to a point adjacent the closed end of body 1, and at least one incisor lancet such as 8a, 8b projecting through and beyond a quantity of absorbent material 10 located wholly within the cup 4. The said lancets may be integral with a circular base plate 7 fitted at its periphery into an annular groove in the cup 4, said base plate 7 having an opening 9 in fluid communication with the cannula 6, or with the cannula (15), Fig. 9 (not shown). Funnel member 3 is formed with an 'L'-shaped groove 5 to allow air to escape from body 1 as the blood enters. The modification of Fig. 4 (not shown) has a removable cannula (6a), and Fig. 5 (not shown) depicts a further modification which has no cannula or air outlet groove but an opening (11) in the bottom of the body leading to a tube (12) of flexible material and a ring (13) which may be clamped so as to seal tube (12). The embodiment of Fig. 7 (not shown) has a similar tube of thermoplastics material which may be sealed at the base by heating, and Fig. 8 (not shown) an outlet tube with a removable plug (13A). The blood collecting device E is used with an apparatus, Fig. 10, in which the tube is inserted into a tubular member 32 on the upper face of a casing 16. A hand is placed with the appropriate finger tip against a block 33 and the body of the finger on a massage block 34 such that the end beneath the nail rests on the cup 4 of the device E. A lever 18, pivotably mounted at 17, is swung over to engage its teeth 20 with a spring-loaded pawl 21, a synthetic sponge pad 19 on the lever being pressed against the top of the finger. As this movement takes place, a beak 18c bears on a lever 25 such that a spring 31 is depressed and when beak 18c and lever 25 cease to interact, the spring 31 is released and device E is pushed sharply upward through the tubular member 32 by the action of lever 25 causing cup 4 to be deformed and driving the lancets into the finger thus making the required incisions, cup 4 returning to its original shape immediately afterwards. Shaft 38 is then set in motion which imparts undulatory movement to the block 34 to massage the finger. Blood flows out of the incisions and when the level in the device E is that required, this movement is interrupted and a relay 23 is energised pulling the pawl 21 in a clockwise direction and freeing handle 18.
