Abstract

1277007 Trench cutting apparatus L P S WILSON 25 June 1969 [25 June 1968 25 July 1968 24 Feb 1969] 30276/68 35671/68 and 9830/69 Heading E1F Trench cutting apparatus comprises an endless cutter chain 11 on an elongate support 12 linearly movable in a carrier 13 for lowering into the ground. Trenches can be dug in a vertical or inclined plane at the back or side of the supporting vehicle by controlling extension of rams 14-16 and 20-21. The rams can be automatically controlled to keep the support in the desired plane irrespective of the tilt of the vehicle. The rams 20, 21 may be replaced by a screw mounting. The carrier 13 can be rotated about its longitudinal axis by a ram 22 so that the chain can follow the direction of the trench as the vehicle changes direction. The chain is driven by an hydraulic motor 30 mounted on the top of the support 12. The motor may be used to move the support in the carrier by locking the chain to the carrier and driving the chain. Alternatively the support may be moved by ram 40 which can be controlled automatically to maintain the trench at a required depth with respect to a reference wire. Excavated material may be carried through the carrier and deflected by plates, possibly aided by water or gas blasts, into a truck, or the material may be heaped to one side of the track. There may be more than one chain, or side cutters may be mounted on a single chain.
