Abstract

1276804 Toothed gearing; bearings FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 12 May 1971 14550/71 Headings F2A and F2Q In a rack-and-pinion steering gear, a pinion 10 is supported in a housing 13 by conical bearings 14, 15, each comprising a metal bearing ring 20, 23, of triangular cross-section, on the pinion shaft, and a plastics bearing ring 19, 24, of complementary triangular cross-section, located in a recess 12 in the housing 13. The bearing surfaces are oppositely inclined at an angle of between 35 and 60 degrees, preferably 45 degrees, to the axis of the pinion. The plastics bearing rings may be of glass reinforced nylon, or P.T.F.E., and the metal bearing rings may be of steel. Shims 26 are interposed between the bearing 15 and a cover-plate 25.
