Abstract

In a rack-and-pinion vehicle steering gear 10, 12, the pinion 10 is tapered axially so that tooth wear may be taken up by axial adjustment of the pinion. As shown, the pinion 10 is carried in a lower plain bearing 13 and an upper ball bearing 14 with a split inner race 15 and an outer race 16 externally threaded for adjustment in a mounting housing 18. In a second arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the adjustment is effected by shims (31).
