Abstract

1,074,357. Rack-and-pinion gearing. NSU MOTORENWERKE A.G. April 15, 1966 [April 17, 1965], No. 16534/66. Heading F2Q. In a vehicle rack-and-pinion steering gear wherein the pinion 2 is rotatably mounted eccentrically in a bush 8 rotatable in a housing 3, an adjustable spring 12 in a hollow screw 11 in the housing 3 acts through a pad 13 bearing on a flat face 14 of the bush 8 to urge the bush in one direction of rotation to resiliently maintain the pinion in mesh with the rack. A set-screw 9 coacts with a second surface 14 of the bush 8 to limit rotation of the bush in the opposite direction. To prevent disengagement of the gear on failure of the spring, a pin (16) in the housing engages a slot (17) in a flange (19) of the bush (8) (Fig. 2, not shown). The setscrew 9 and spring means 11, 12 may be combined, by extension of the screw 11. A flexible coupling connects the pinion spindle to the steering shaft (not shown), and the bush 8 and pinion 2 are supported in roller bearings or plastics bearings.
