Abstract
1431330 Extruder driving gear A BENADI 29 Nov 1973 [5 Dec 1972] 55498/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] In an extruder, for thermoplastics material, comprising a pair of co-rotating intermeshing screws, the screw shafts 12, 13 are rotated by a pair of symmetrically arranged drive-shafts 5, 6, each of which rotates both shafts 12, 13, by engagement of each of straight toothed gears 8, 9, on the shafts 5, 6, with both of straight toothed gears 10, 11, respectively, carried by the shafts 12, 13. The shafts 5, 6 are rotated from a single input shaft 1, via helical toothed gears 2, and 3, 4. To avoid unbalanced torque transmission from the shafts 5, 6 arising from play between the gears, the play between gears 2, and 3, 4 is taken up by axial thrust bearings 14, 15, which are each axially adjustable by screws 16, 17 to displace the shafts 5, 6 axially without rotation. The gearing provides for the transmission of a higher torque to the shafts 12, 13, than obtained by a single drive-shaft. The play between the gears 8, 10, 11 and 9 is taken up by locking the shafts 1, 12 and 13, and axially displacing the bearings 14, 15 to cause rotation of the shafts 5, 6 by reaction with the gear 2. In the Fig. 4 embodiment, the axial thrust bearings 14 bear on each shaft 5 through cup springs 20, the displacement under load of which indicates the torque transmitted by each shaft and is measurable by the distance "A", to facilitate balancing of the torque transmitted to each screw.
