WENZEL 26 May 1970 [27 May 1969] 25322/70 Heading C5E Coal and/or oil is gasified at 12 with H 2 to pro - duce CH 4 which is converted with water vapour at 13 to a mixture of H 2 and CO. The CO is converted to CO 2 at 14 and the CO 2 is washed out at 15, H 2 being recycled to the gasifier 12. The CO 2 is delivered to a converter 16 where CH 4 , led off at 28, is converted to H 2 and CO optionally with extra CO 2 from 29. The heat for the various reactions is derived from a nuclear reactor 11, and ash is discharged at 37. In a modification, see Fig. 2 (not shown), the converter 16 is replaced by an apparatus (64) supplied with H 2 and CO (instead of with CH 4 ) from the methane converter (42), where CO 2 from the washer (56) oxidizes the H 2 and produces the required mixture of H 2 and CO. The gasifiers 12 (40) may be of fluidized bed type. The CO 2 supplied at 29 may come from an ore reduction process or from the partial combustion of coal or oil, and the H 2 O supplied at 23 may be derived by drying coal being charged at 18. The steps of converting the CH 4 with H 2 O and with CO 2 may be combined, the effluent gas being divided as product and for converting to H 2 .
