Abstract

127,652. Morgan, J. S. May 14, 1917. Progressive evaporators.-Apparatus for concentrating sulphuric acid and other liquids consists of a tower or chamber containing basins E, Fig. 1, provided with lips F and so arranged that the acid drips from basin to basin, and is at the same time exposed to the action of products of combustion or hot air or other gases passing up the tower. The basins act as baffles, causing the gases to take a circuitous path, and are mounted on skeleton supports M, N so that the hot gases can pass below the basins and up all round them. In order to obtain access to the interior of the tower, one or more of the sides O is formed of plates which are fixed but removable, consisting, for example, of slabs or cast-iron plates cemented in position. In a modified apparatus, Fig. 2, alternate basins P are annular in form, the basins E being centrally mounted, and each of the pans is formed with a number of lips Q.
