A tray for gas or vapour liquid contact columns has means for directing a stream of liquid across the tray, a plurality of partitions spaced apart and disposed transversely of the stream of liquid and arranged such that the liquid flows under and over alternate partitions, the bottom of the tray being provided with alternating perforate and imperforate sections so that the gas or vapour passing upwardly through the tray is delivered into the ascending portions of the stream of liquid flowing across the tray. As shown in Fig. 2, the tray comprises a bottom plate 40 supported by beams 20 and 21 which extend across the column, the vertical flange of the beam 21 being extended to form an apron D. The plate 40 has openings 47 provided therein which are covered by perforated plates 70, the perforations being adapted in size and number for the particular use of the tray. Supported on the plate 40 are vertical partitions 42 and 43 which with vertical side plates 41 form a series of troughs across the tray under and over which liquid flowing across the tray passes from the liquid inlet side of the tray adjacent the beam 20. The partitions 43 have flaps 53 attached to their lower edges and extensions 44 to their upper edges and arranged between partitions 42 and 43 are series of perforated plates 80 secured together by bolts 100. An upper extension 49 of the side plates 41 is preferably provided and the space between the beam 20 and the shell of the column is closed by a plate 22 integral with the horizontal flange of the beam 20. The spaces between the side plates 41 and the shell of the column are closed by suitable plates so that gas or vapour rising upwardly in the column passes through the perforated plates 70 into the upwardly flowing portions of the stream of liquid passing over the tray. Weir plates 45 are attached to the upper edges of partitions 42.
