To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD TEMPLE a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 63 Pitt street, Sydney, in the State of New South Wales, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Purifying Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The pipe 41 leads from the purifier 36 to a water-locked vessel 42 containing water to the level w-w. has a gas outlet pipe 43, leading to the engine and the central pipe 44. The 1pipes have their openings below water leve A by pass 45 with tap 46 is provided between the pipes 41 and 43 and a tap 67 on the pipe 43 for drawing oflsamples of gas for testing purposes. v
The hopper for introducing the fuel to the generator consists of a cylindrical chamber 47 turning fairly closely in a casing 48 arranged on the top of the generator 1. The casinghas an opening 49 at its upper part and an opening 50 of larger size than the opening 49 extending some distance into the furnace which openlng is provided at the lower part with hinge doors 51 held norposition by weights 52. The chamber 47 has an opening 53 larger than theopening 49 but smaller than the opening 50 it has also a handle 54 for revolving same. 7
In operation the fire being started in the generator the gas is allowed to pass through one setof scrubbers and washers and the shaft 37 is set in motion. The buckets 30 on chains 28 will be moved' in the direction shown by the arrows (Fig. 2) and will draw gas from the generator to above the water 1n the compartment 21, convey it beneath I same and discharge the gas under the diset of sprockets 27.
By. drawing off all the water from the chamber 19 the apparatus may be converted into a suction plant in which the gas will be drawn from the generator 1 through the scrubbers l5 and chamber 19 by the suction of the engine. In this case the chamber 19 will act as a separate scrubber.
Although I have described and illustrated a plant having a duplex set of scrubbers, washers and purifiers, this being the arrangem'ent I prefer, it is obvious that in some cases only one set might be used, and as will be understood, the parts of the duplex apparatus may be operated simultaneously or alternately as may be desired.
I claim as my invention 1. In a gas purifying apparatus, a vessel divided into two communicating compartments constructed to be partially filled with water, a series of buckets, means for moving the said buckets within the said compartments in such a manner that the gasabove the water therein will be conveyed from the upper portion of the compartment to a pointbeneath the water where the gas is released and caused to escape to'thc other or second of said compartments, and a body of coke pebbles or the like in said second-compartment and through which the said gas is caused to pass after entering this second compartment.
2. In a gas purifying apparatus, a vessel divided into two communicating compartments constructed to be partly filled with water, sprockets mounted in one of said compartments, chains passing over the said sprockets, buckets carried by the said chains for conveying the gas from the upper portion of the said compartment above the water therein to a point beneath the water therein where the said gas is released and caused to escape to the other of said compartments and a body of coke pebbles and the like in the said second compartment and through which the said gas after entering the same is caused to pass.
3. In a-gas purifying apparatus, a vessel divided into two communicating compartments constructed to be partly filled with water, sprockets mounted in one of said compartments, chains passing over the said sprockets, buckets carried by the said chains for conveying the gas from the upper portion of the said compartments above the water therein to a point beneath the water therein where the said gas is released and caused to escape to the other of said compartments, a body of coke pebbles and the like in the said second compartment and an auxiliary vessel placed abot'e the aforesaid vessel and into which the said gas passes after passing through the said body of coke pebbles and the like in the said second compartment.
