0. DOBBELSTEIN APPARATUS FOR DRYING 0R SMOLDERING LOOSE MATERIAL Filed Nov. 26, 1926 I Patented Nov. 6 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O'I'IO DOBBELS'IEIN, DECEASED, LATE OF ESSEN-ON-THE-BUHR, GERMANY, BY KARO- LINE DOBBELS'IEIN, ADMINISTRATOR, F ESSEN-ON-THE-RUHR, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR DRYING OR SMOLDERING LOOSE MATERIAL.
Application flied November 26, 1926, Serial No. 150,909, and in Germany November 30, 1925.
This invention relatesto improvements in apparatus for drying or smoldering loose material, and more particularly in apparatus comprisin a rotary member provided with annular c ambers separated from one-another by annular heating chambers. The object of the improvements is to provide an apparatus of this class in which the rotary art is separated in an air-tight manner rom the chambers receiving the gas or vapor developed from the loose material by heating the same. Another object of the improvements is to provide an apparatus in which loose material which is not subject to sintering can be more readily treated. With these ob ects in view the invention consists in disposing the said apparatus with its axis of rotation vertically, so that the chambers containing the loose material are horizontal.
2o Thereby water seals can be provided for the rotary drum, and the loose material is su ported on the horizontal walls of the cham ers.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference c "aracters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawing,
3o ig. 1, is a sectional elevation showing the improved apparatus, and
Fig. 2, is a sectional plan view taken on the line-22 of Fig. 1.
In the example shown in the drawin the as improved apparatus comprises a rotary rum 3 provided at its bottom with an annular rail 4 supported on suitable rollers 5. 1 Further, teeth 8 are secured to the bottom of the drum 3, and the said teeth are in mesh with a bevel gearin 9 for impartin rotary movement to the rum. Below t e said drum ,there is a stationary tubular member 25 which is open at its to and closed at its bottom by a lid 11 provi ed with a plurality M5 of burners f for supplying a heating medium "to the drum. At its top t e drum is provided with a discharge pipe or stack 6. The drum is' provided with superposed pairs of annular plates 7 closed at their outer circumtO ferences and communicating at their inner circumferences with the inner part of the drum 3 as will be described hereinafter. Between the superposed pairs of plates 7 annular chambers b are provided, which are closed at their inner circumferences and open at their outer circumferences, the said chambers being adapted to receive the loose material.
The drum is provided with radial partitions 10 dividing the same into chambers d and e. The heating chambers 0 provided between the plates 7 are divided by radial partitions g extending all through the said chambers into sectional chambers, and each sectional chamber is provided with a radial partition m extending from the wall of the drum 3 to a point away from the outer circumference of the plates 7. The wall of the drum 3 is formed with openings 11 and is connecting each chamber d and 8 with two adjacent sectional chambers c. The chambers orpassages d are open at their bottom ends and closed at their top ends, while the chambers or passages e are open at their top ends and closed at their bottom ends.
The drum 3 and plates 7 are surrounded by a cylinder 12 divided by a partition 13 into two chamb rs s and t each having an outlet 14: and separated from the drum 3 and plates 7, 7 by a foraminated cylinder 15.
At one side of the cylinder 12 there is a vertical chamber p, and through one side of the said chamber plungers o are radially movable. The chamber p is adapted to re-- ceive the loose material, which material is pushed by the plungers (i into the annular chambers b. Adjacent to the chamber {1 there is an outlet 1- extending the who e height of the drum and adapted to remove the loose material at the end of the smoldering operation. For withdrawing the smoldered material from the chambers 12 into the outlet 1' scrapers n are provided, which extend into the chambers b to the wall of the drum 3.
, Water seals u and v are provided for closing the chambers s and t and the chambers b as against the outer air and the drum 3.
As shown in Fig. 1, the uppermost plate 7 is provided with a pair of concentric flanges 18 engaged by a downwardly directed flange 19 of the annular jacket 8, t. In a similar way, an inward extension of the bottom of the jacket 8, 25 carries a pair of concentric flanges 2O engaged by a flange 21 depending from the bottom plate 7. The annular spaces included between the flanges 18 and 20 are filled with a suitable sealing liquid.
In the operation of the apparatus the drum 3 is rotated by means of the bevel gearing 8, 9, heating gas is supplied through the pipes or burners f, and the loose material contained within the chamber or hopper p is continuously pushed into the chambers b by means of the plungers 0. The heating gas rises within the chambers d and flows therefrom through the openings 23 into the heating chambers provided between the plates 7. Within the said chambers the gas flows outwardly and inwardly again, whereupon it is discharged into the chambers e and the discharge pipe or stack 6. The direction of the flow of the heating gas has been indicated in the figures by arrows. By the rotary movement of the drum 3 the fuel is gradually carried around to the scrapers n by means of which it is delivered through the outlet 1'. The gas developed from the material flows into the chambers s and 6 from whence it is removed throu h the pipes 14. In the retracted positions of the plungers o the loose material falls to the front side of the plungers from the side thereof. In such cases in which the said plungers are not located one above the other but are laterally displaced with relation to each other the material drops in front of the said plungers from above.
By providing horizontal chambers for the loose material now sintering material can be treated.
'While in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawing, and that various changes may be made in-the general arrangement of the apparatus and the construction of its parts without departing from the invention.
