Abstract
270,720. Power Specialty Co., (Assignees of Primrose, J., and Swanson, H. R.). May 5, 1926, [Convention date]. Gases, treating with liquids.-A fractionating tower comprises a vertical casing 1 provided with an oil and vapour inlet A<1>, a vapour outlet A<2>, a number of superposed bubbling trays B, BA arranged in groups with means for distributing vapours and separating liquids, and fractional condensate outlets J formed with adjustable troughs which permit a variable fraction of the condensate being passed to a subjacent tray. Each tray B, Fig. 2, comprises a number of similar sections b surrounded by segmental plates C<1>, C<2>. The sections b have ports b<2> surrounded by raised lips b<3>. The segments C<1> are supported by ribs D, Figs. 3 and 4, and are spaced away from the container wall, the space being closed by a washer G, while the plates b are supported on transverse bars D<1>, D<2>, the levels of the plates and segments being adjusted by levelling screws E. A gas-tight joint is made between the sections and the segments by overlapping flanges C<3>, C<5>. The segments C<2> are sloped to avoid collection of stagnant liquid. The ports b<2> are covered by bubbling hoods F having serrated edges. The segments C<1> are formed with drain outlets C<9>, which supply liquid to weir chambers having notched weir plates H. The trays BA located above shell openings A' alternate with the trays B and are identical therewith except that their tray plate members CA<1> have shorter drain pipes C<90> leading to separate seal chambers I from which liquid passes either to a tray B or to a trough J, Fig. 5, movable radially through an aperture A<7> on a spindle J<6> having an indicator pointer. Clean up sections for collecting condensates comprise a liquid scrubbing pocket a, the inner wall of which is formed by an inverted funnel K. The oil and vapour are initially separated by discharge against a perforated spiral Land also by separating screens M comprising a number of parallel plates having slanting depending blades M<1> dipping into troughs M<2>, Fig. 13.
