Abstract
1276479 Lasers COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 25002/71 Heading H1C A gas laser discharge tube has an anode 12, Fig. 3, and several cathodes 13 each having a sharp edge or point facing the anode and each being supplied with power through a respective capacitor 16. The power supply may be a pulse source 15 or a high impedance D.C. supply 17 shunted by an interrupter 15a. The cathodes may be pins or thin sheets, and the capacitors may be integral with them as in Fig. 4, where dielectric material 19 separates the supply lead 20 from the cathode 18. To prevent arcing across such a capacitor the dielectric may be extended as at 24. Fig. 4 also shows auxiliary anodes 23 surrounded by insulation 23a. The cathodes may be formed as semicircular metallic deposits on this insulation, Fig. 5 (not shown). In Fig. 6, each cathode 31 is deposited on an insulating sheet 32 backed by a conductive sheet 33 connected to the anode. In use, the optical axis of the laser is parallel to the anode plane, and is equispaced from the anode and the cathodes. The arrangements are stated to prevent arcs.
