Abstract

1276409 Supply systems for gas discharge lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Nov 1970 [10 Nov 1969] 52915/70 Heading H2H Apparatus comprising a low pressure gas discharge lamp has the two input terminals thereto connected to each other by a series combination of at least the lamp and a switching element, the element being connected to a control device so as to be controlled to feed the lamp with an intermittent current in which a "Current On" time of W seconds is followed by an, at least "Current Off" time of R seconds, wherein, to obtain a condition favourable for the production of light the pressure in the lamp discharge space is at least 4 Torr and is, in addition, so high that the condition # E /# D is satisfied in that the ratio W/(W+R) is lower than 0À4 and the period W+R of the supply to the lamp has a value lying between 2## E and 2## D where # E is the energy relaxation time (in seconds) of the electrons in the discharge space, and # D is the diffusion time (in seconds) of the electrons in the discharge space. The switching element may comprise one or more transistors or may take the form of a transistor across the D.C. diagonal of a diode bridge. In one embodiment the gas in the lamp may be neon at a pressure between 5 and 25 Torr and W/(W+R) equal to 0À3 and W+R between 4 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> and 50 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> seconds.
