1275508 Aminoalkane diol hydrochloride/ alkanolamine catalysts for resins COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORP 9 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 1501/71 Divided out of 1275507 Heading C3R A latent catalyst composition for thermosetting resins is obtained by dissolving 100 p.b.w. of an amino alkane diol in 670-720 p.b.w. of a C 1-4 alkanol or a methyl or ethyl monoether of mono- or di-ethylene or -propylene glycol, adding an equimolar amount of HCl with agitation at 35‹ C. or below, then adding 0À56-0À56 mole of an alkanolamine per mole of amino alkane diol; the aminoalkane diol has the formula RC(NH 2 )(CH 2 OH) 2 and the alkanolamine R 1 R 2 C(NR 2 )CH 2 OH, where R is a methyl or ethyl group and R 1 and R 2 are each hydrogen or a methyl or ethyl group. In examples the aminoalkane diol is dissolved in an alcohol, HCl is added in equivalent amount in concentrated aqueous or gaseous form, and the alkanolamine is then added. The materials used are 2-amino-2-methyl or ethyl-1 : 3-propanediol; the C 1 to C 4 alkanols and the methyl and ethyl monoethers of ethylene, propylene, diethylene and dipropylene glycol; and 2-amino- 2-methyl-propanol-1, 2-amino-butanol-1 and ethanolamine and their N : N-dimethyl derivatives. The solutions are used as catalysts in compositions containing a melamine-formaldehyde or butylated urea-formaldehyde resin as acid-curing resin; an alkyd, urethane, acrylic, or polyvinyl chloride/acetate resin as hydroxy resin; TiO 2 , Al paste, chrome yellow, molybdate orange or a TiO 2 /BaSO 4 /talc mixture as pigment; and butanol, mineral spirits, naphtha and xylene as solvents, optionally with ethoxyethyl acetate, or 1-nitropropane and acetone.
