Abstract

1275507 Coated metal articles COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORP 9 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 43106/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Articles, e.g. of metal, may be coated with a baking enamel comprising an acid-curing thermosetting resin, a resin having hydroxy groups reactable with the acid-curing resin, and a latent catalyst consisting of the hydrochloride of an aminoalkane diol R-C(NH 2 ) (CH 2 OH) 2 , and an alkanolamine R 1 R 2 C(NR 2 ) CH 2 OH where R is a methyl or ethyl group, and R 1 and R 2 are each hydrogen or a methyl or ethyl group. The molar ratio of aminoalkane polyol to alkanolamine is preferably 1.5-2:1, the solution strength 20 wt%, the ratio of acid-curing to hydroxy resin 1:2-4 by weight, and the amount of catalyst 0.4- 4wt% of the resin solids. In Examples the aminoalkane diol is dissolved in an alcohol, HCI is added in equivalent amount in concentrated aqueous or in gaseous form, and the alkanolamine is then added. The materials used are 2-amino-2-methyl or ethyl-1 :3-propanediol; the C 1 to C 4 alkanols and the methyl and ethyl monoethers of ethylene, propylene, diethylene and dipropylene glycol; and 2-amino-2-methyl-propanol-1, 2-amino-butanol-1 and ethanolamine and their N:N-dimethyl derivatives. The solutions are used as catalysts in compositions containing a melamine-formaldehyde and/or butylated urea-formaldehyde resin as acid-curing resin; an alkyd, urethane, acrylic, or polyvinyl chloride/acetate resin as hydroxy resin; TiO 2 , Al paste, chrome yellow, molybdate orange or a TiO 2 BaSO 4 /talc mixture as pigment; and butanol, mineral spirits, naphtha and xylene as solvents, optionally with ethoxyethyl acetate, or 1-nitropropane and acetone. The enamels are applied, in Examples 1 and 2, to metal articles and baked.
