Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a resin composition for water-based paint, curable by low- temperature baking, and giving a coating film with excellent characteristics, containing a methylol melamine resin etherified with mixed alkyl groups, and a crosslinkable water-based alkyd resin, polyester resin or acrylic resin.
CONSTITUTION: A composition composed of (A) 5W40 parts by weight of a methylol melamine resin having 0.2W0.8 free methylol group per one melamine nucleus on the average, and etherified with methanol and butanol, and (B) 60W95 parts by weight of an alkali neutrilized product of a water-soluble or water-dispersible alkyd resin, polyester resin, acrylic resin or their mixture which reacts with the (A) component by heating and forms crosslinks. The existence of the residual free methylol group in the etherified methylol melamine is supposed to have the major contribution to the low-temperature curability of the composition.
