Abstract

A binder for water-soluble baking paint is prepared by mixing (1) a hydrophilic resin with (2) a water-soluble amine resin formed by etherification of (a) a monomeric methylol compound or (b) low M.W. condensation product containing sufficient methylol groups to be water soluble, or mixture of (a) and (b), the said etherification being performed by first reacting the methylol compound (a) or condensation product (b) or mixture with a glycol having 2-4 C atoms and then with CH3OH or C2H5OH in the presence of an acid catalyst, and (3) adding aqueous NH3 or an alkyl- or alkanol-amine to the mixture. The hydrophilic resin plasticizer may be an unsaturated polyester, e.g. phthalopentaerythritol alkyds modified with fatty acids, e.g. those of linseed or soya bean oils or ricinenic acid. In a typical Example (1) a mixed etherified amino resin prepared by condensation of HCHO, melamine, urea and ethylene glycol with subsequent addition of CH3OH was mixed with a pentaerythritol-phthalic-adipic alkyd modified with ricinenic acid and neutralized with Et3N.ALSO:A water soluble leaking paint containing a pigment e.g. anatase and, as winder, a mixture of (1) a hydrophilic resin e.g. an unsaturated polyester and (2) a water-soluble mixed etherified amine resin and (3) aqueous NH3 or an alkyl or alkanolamine is applied to a steel sheet and baked e.g. for 40 mins at 135 DEG C.
