[Also in Division C7] A curable resin is prepared by heating a methylolaminotriazine and/or methylolurea, the methylol groups of which have been etherified with a C 1-8 monohydric alcohol and with a C 2-4 alkylene glycol, with an adduct of an ethylenically unsaturated α,#-dicarboxylic acid and/or anhydride with a drying oil. Suitable methylol compounds are those of melamine and guanamines having a benzyl, ethyl, allyl, or cyclohexyl pendant group, and of urea; they may be etherified with methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, isobutanol or amyl, hexyl, octyl or cyclohexyl alcohols, and with ethylene, propylene or butylene or diethylene glycols or glycerol monomethyl ether. Suitable acids are maleic, fumaric, itaconic and citraconic acids; suitable oils are linseed, soya, Perilla, dehydrated castor, wood, oiticica, safflower, sunflower, and isomerized soya oils. The products may be neutralized with ammonia, triethylamine, triethanolamine and dimethyl ethanolamine to give water-soluble resins. A polyol, e.g. trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane or glycerol, may be added during the reaction, up to 30 wt. per cent of the adduct. In examples, hexamethoxymethyl-melamine is condensed with 1: 2-propylene glycol, then with a linseed oil/ maleic anhydride adduct, with and without trimethylolpropane, and the product is neutralized with triethylamine. The viscosity of the products (50-100 DIN seconds, preferably) is measured as a 50% solution in butoxyethanol; 10% aqueous solutions are used for electrophoretic coating.
