Abstract

1275261 Electron guns UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 30 May 1969 [4 June 1968] 26600/68 Heading H1D A cold-cathode gun for movable beam treatment of materials, e.g. in a crucible 16, Fig. 1, comprises a concave, e.g. part-spherical, cathode 4 and a control electrode 10, preferably placed in or adjacent an aperture in the cathode. A third screening electrode 13 may be arranged outside the cathode and this may be curved over to embrace the edge of the cathode to reduce unwanted emission. The electrode 10 may be movable to alter the focus of the gun. All the electrodes may be hollow so that a rod to be treated may pass along the axis, Fig. 3 (not shown). A different arrangement for welding tube 36, Fig. 4, has an annular cathode 4 with control electrodes 10, 48 and screen 13. The filling may be helium (4À5 x 10<SP>-2</SP>-2 Î 10<SP>-1</SP> torr) or argon or oxygen.
