Abstract
1,033,029. Electron beam apparatus. FIELD EMISSION CORPORATION. May 13, 1963 [Oct. 22, 1962], No. 18910/63. Heading H1D. Apparatus for irradiating substances with pulses of high velocity electrons comprises a field emission cathode and a thin walled anode through which the electrons pass. As shown, the anode 30 at the end of support tube 32 is hollow and open to the atmosphere so that a container or holder for the substance to be irradiated can be inserted by means of handle 46. The anode is surrounded within the envelope 10 by four diametrically arranged field emission cathodes 22, each comprising a supporting block for an array of sharp needle points 26. The cathodes are supported by arcuate elements 20 which also provide a focusing structure. The cathode blocks may be of copper, the needle points of tungsten and the anode of beryllium, titanium or molybdenum. Suitable dimensions are given. Sufficiently high voltages are supplied to the cathodes to cause the vapourization of metal from the cathode so that vacuum arc operation occurs. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), a field emission cathode is opposite a window in an oval-shaped anode and envelope closure element. Three such tubes may be supported in a triangular support, around an irradiation space.
